Usage pattern
Going through the usage pattern will in most cases be depended on what agreements the customer has. Our electronic wizard will adjust to the following agreements.
• EA
• EAS
• OVS
• Select
• Open
Our reviews for partners with SPLA will so far be proceeded with a questioner in Excel, but SPLA will in time be included in our web based MAP usage.
MAP license has 12 years experience in assisting customers with the correct description of their usage of Microsoft products. We have made a special questionnaire that we are now further developing to a web-based solution. With this solution we will go through all the questions that are relevant for the agreements we offer.
We have experienced that customers have a low knowledge about Product User Rights, something that we view as a necessity to be able to describe their usage pattern. It is an advantage that they use scanner tools like Altiris or SMS, but there is still some time before it will be possible setting up a correct summary.
It is a big advantage in getting the customers description into a system, where we in most cases can come back with additional questions on a later date. It is important to be customer friendly and pedagogical. In many cases the customer have been aware of these conditions, (see below). Even dough we have to increase the customers knowledge about Microsoft license rules, we still have to be aware and respect the consequences this might have for the customer.
In cases where the customer wishes a closer description on our conclusions, we are careful with documenting this from the customer's agreement, also with regards to PUR and PL.
Examples of use that customers often overlook:
• With use of Citrix, you need Windows TS CAL.
• There may be use for more TS CAL then what we can see from Citrix concurrent use.
• It is a need for User CAL when we have Push for Mobile phone, also with use of Lotus Notes on Windows Svr.
• External users may create need for External connector.
• The use of Unified M Unified Messaging; spreadsheet publishing og office Comm svr will create a need to consider Ent CAL.
In our Wizard we come up with the following questions:
• Qualified desktop and qualified user.
• Windows Svr in physical and virtual environment with calculating the need for Windows Datacenter pros.
• Servers in test environment and who runs them.
• Other Microsoft applications like Exchange, SharePoint, project.
• Use of System Center products, number of clients and servers that is being monitored.
• Correct description of SQL depended on if the customer chooses server CAL or pr Pros mode.
• Use of other server products in pr pros, like BizTalk, ISA
• Installed application products, like Office, Project, Visio.
• What is the number of people using MS dev tools, and what products they use?
• Install MS OS.
When the customer has described his Usage pattern, we do a manually and logically run through the data. This usually leads to a change in the usage pattern that will also change the numbers, in many cases it will also lead to a need for more programs. In most cases it is a need for CAL that there scanning tools did not pick up.
We add the data from the customer's usage pattern, directly into our license manager (licman).
Right to use
We also ask the customer to give us information about their license agreements, present and historically. This contains Open, Select and OEM licenses. In some cases it can be Microsoft who wishes a closer look at SAM PID & POL. MAP License have our own license tool (licman) that we have used for more than 2500 customers since the year 2000. It is based on license data calculates what the customer has the right to use. This can in many cases be compared to the MLS rapport, but is more customers friendly since it is web based. The basis data for Licman is Total Usage reports, which is gathered from MS.explore after our specifications.
Status
With the customer's data from usage pattern, combined with right to use for licenses we can give a quick status on what the customer is in need and lack of.
With use of licman we can give a quick and correct status, but also give both Microsoft and the customer information about missing basis for SA, which is the most common information we uncover.
SAM assessment report
We build the worksheet SAM assessment report directly in to Licman. So that the customer themselves, can do an internal assessment, with or without consultants from Map License. Therefore we can also offer Microsoft finished assessment reports for customers who wishes a report.
